AP3 and MP3: What is the Difference?
Both AP3 and MP3 are lithium-based greases widely used in construction and automotive applications. The confusion between them is understandable — they look similar, feel similar, and are often used interchangeably. But they are formulated for different purposes.
AP3 (All Purpose 3) — a lithium-based grease with NLGI Grade 3 consistency. Designed specifically for heavy-duty applications requiring high load capacity and mechanical stability. The “3” refers to its NLGI grade, which means it is firmer and stays in place better under pressure.
MP3 (Multi Purpose 3) — also a lithium-based grease with NLGI Grade 3 consistency. Formulated for a broader range of applications with good all-round performance. It offers a wider temperature range and better water resistance than AP3 in some formulations.

When to Use AP3 Grease
Choose AP3 when your equipment faces heavy loads, shock loading, and high-stress conditions:
Excavator bucket pins and bushings — the constant digging, lifting, and swinging motion creates enormous stress on pin joints. AP3’s superior load-carrying capacity prevents premature wear.
Crane slew bearings — the main slew bearing on a crane carries the entire upper structure. AP3’s mechanical stability ensures the grease does not break down under this continuous heavy load.
Tipper and truck wheel bearings — loaded trucks put extreme pressure on wheel bearings, especially on Mumbai’s uneven roads. AP3 handles the combination of load, speed, and heat.
Concrete mixer drum bearings — the rotating drum creates constant shear force on bearings. AP3 maintains its consistency and does not thin out over time.
When to Use MP3 Grease
Choose MP3 when you need a reliable, cost-effective grease for general maintenance:
General chassis lubrication — grease points on truck chassis, suspension components, and steering linkages work well with MP3.
Electric motors and fans — the wider temperature range of MP3 handles the heat generated by electric motor bearings while providing good protection at startup temperatures.
Automotive workshops — for general vehicle servicing where you need one grease that works across multiple applications, MP3 is the practical choice.
Light industrial machinery — conveyors, pumps, and general factory equipment that operates under moderate loads.
Can You Use AP3 Where MP3 is Recommended (and Vice Versa)?
AP3 in place of MP3: Yes, this always works. AP3 exceeds MP3’s performance in load capacity and mechanical stability. The only downside is slightly higher cost.
MP3 in place of AP3: Not recommended for heavy-duty applications. MP3 may not provide sufficient protection under extreme loads, leading to premature bearing failure and costly downtime.
The safe rule: you can always go up in grade (use AP3 instead of MP3), but never go down.
How Much Grease Does Your Equipment Need?
Over-greasing is as bad as under-greasing. Over-greasing causes seal blowouts, overheating, and wasted product. Here are general guidelines:
Excavator pins: Grease until fresh grease appears at the seal, then stop. Typically every 8-10 operating hours.
Wheel bearings: Pack to 30-50% of the bearing cavity. Over-packing causes overheating.
Chassis points: 2-3 pumps per grease point during regular service intervals.
Electric motors: Follow manufacturer specifications — typically small amounts at defined intervals.
Storage Tips for Mumbai’s Climate
Mumbai’s heat and humidity can degrade grease quality if stored improperly:
Keep containers sealed and store indoors, away from direct sunlight. Do not store drums on their sides — water can collect on the lid and contaminate the grease when opened. Use grease within 12 months of opening. Check for oil separation (a layer of oil on top) — slight separation is normal, but excessive separation indicates degraded grease.
