Calcium and lithium are the two most common grease thickeners on Indian industrial sites. The choice between them comes down to two questions: how wet is the application, and how hot does it run. Choose calcium grease when…

Water exposure is the main hazard and temperatures stay low. Calcium soap resists washout, so it suits water pumps, equipment exposed to rain and washdown, and low-speed points where heat is not a factor. It is also the cheaper option, which matters at volume. Choose lithium grease when…

You need one grease for mixed duty and some of it runs warm. Lithium’s higher dropping point keeps it in place on bearings that heat up, and its mechanical stability holds up under working shear. For general multi-purpose service this is why lithium grades like MP3 are the site default rather than calcium.

Wet and cool → calcium. Warm or mixed-duty → lithium. If an application is both wet and warm, lithium-calcium or lithium-complex grades bridge the gap, but for most sites the simple split above covers the decision. Do not run calcium grease above ~70°C and do not pay for lithium where a low-temperature wet point only needs calcium.

Compatibility and switching between thickeners

Calcium and lithium greases use different soap thickeners, and the two are not reliably compatible. Mixing them in the same point can break down the thickener structure so the blend softens and bleeds oil, leaving the bearing under-protected. When you change a point from calcium to lithium or back, purge the old grease completely, keep pumping fresh grease through until only the new grease shows at the seal, rather than topping up over the old.

For applications that genuinely see both water and heat, there are lithium-calcium and lithium-complex grades formulated to combine water resistance with a higher dropping point. These bridge the gap where a plain calcium grease would melt out and a plain lithium grease would wash off, but for the majority of points the simple wet-and-cool versus warm-or-mixed split decides the choice without needing a specialist grade.

Storage and shelf life

Store both greases in closed containers away from heat, water and dust. Calcium grease is the more heat-sensitive of the two in storage because of its lower dropping point, so keep it cool and check older stock for oil separation before use, a layer of oil on top means the grease has started to bleed and should be stirred back in or discarded if badly separated. Always decant with a clean scoop or pump; dipping a dirty tool into a drum contaminates the whole batch with grit that then ends up in your bearings.
